What Toronto roofs are dealing with
Toronto and the bays either side of it are built on hills running down to the water, and a lot of the housing sits on genuinely steep blocks. That matters to a roof quote more than most people realise, because access is a real cost. A roof that would be straightforward on a flat block in Cardiff can need scaffolding, edge protection and a longer setup here, and any quote that has not been on site is guessing at that.
The other defining feature is the bush. Toronto has heavy tree cover, mature gums close to houses, and streets where the canopy is genuinely over the roofline. That drives a steady diet of blocked gutters and valleys, moss and lichen on the shaded southern faces, and, in the streets backing onto bushland, a real ember consideration that makes gutter protection more than a convenience.

Steep blocks and access
Getting safely onto a roof on a block that falls away is a bigger part of the job here than the roof work itself sometimes is. It is the main reason two Toronto quotes for the same roof can differ so much: one has allowed for the access and one has not.
Canopy over the roofline
Mature gums drop bark and leaf constantly, and valleys pack solid. A blocked valley on a tile roof backs water under the tiles either side and shows up inside as a ceiling stain nowhere near the actual problem.
Moss and lichen on shaded faces
Tree cover keeps the southern faces damp for days after rain, which is exactly what moss and lichen want. Left long enough it roots into the surface, holds moisture against the tile and needs treating rather than just blasting off.

Why is my Toronto roof quote higher than my friend's in Cardiff?
Usually access. A steep block, a long carry, no room for equipment or a roof that needs scaffolding and edge protection all add cost before any roofing happens. It is worth asking a quote to spell out what it has allowed for access, because that is generally where the difference is.
Is gutter guard worth it here?
On most Toronto blocks with gums overhead, yes. It reduces how often the gutters need clearing, which matters more when clearing them yourself is not realistic on a steep site. In the streets backing onto bushland the ember consideration is a second reason.
Can you clean moss off without damaging the tiles?
Yes, done properly. Heavy moss and lichen is treated rather than only blasted, because blasting removes what you can see and leaves the roots in the surface. Pressure is matched to the tile and worked down the fall, never up it.
