What Newcastle city roofs are dealing with

Our terrace leaks where it joins next door. Whose roof is it?
It depends what has failed and where the boundary runs, and it is often genuinely shared. We will find the actual entry point and document it with photos so both households are working from the same information rather than arguing about it. Who pays is a matter between you and the neighbour.
Can I put Colorbond on a heritage-listed terrace?
Sometimes, and sometimes not. Conservation areas and heritage listings have their own controls on roof material, profile and colour, and they differ. Check with council before you commit to a material. It is a short conversation that avoids an expensive mistake.
What is a box gutter and why does everyone worry about them?
It is a wide gutter that sits within the roof structure rather than at the edge, common on terraces, shopfronts and older commercial buildings. Because it is inside the building line, an overflow goes indoors. That is why its size and its overflow provision matter far more than they do on a normal gutter.
Is Newcastle East exposed enough to need coastal-grade steel?
Yes, and the streets closest to the beach are at the sharper end of it. The manufacturers publish minimum distances from breaking surf for each grade. Any quote for metal roofing there should be able to name the grade it has allowed and explain why.
